It is likely that the best festival you haven’t been to in North America is the BPM Festival in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. It straddles the new year every year and brings some of the finest names in underground dance music in addition to some pretty splashy DJs as well—see Tiesto surprise set on night 1 of the fest. In any case, there is no shortage of talent for a solid week throughout rotating venues, both day and night. Beach clubs, cave parties, with Mayan ruins as the backdrop; this festival is very industry-centric. It’s not uncommon to party with the very DJ’s you saw perform earlier that day or night. This is a version of Miami music week that manages to be more low key and cheaper to attend. Check it out…flights are cheap to Playa Del Carmen, and hotels are reasonable as well.
Today I bring you a mix offering from the final days of the BPM fest on January 11th 2013. It is none other than a Never Say Never live set from Alexander Coe aka Sasha. 2013 should be another fantastic year for the Welsh jock as we eagerly anticipate the 3rd installment of his Involver mix series (Involver 3), which will hopefully drop in the coming months. Otherwise, enjoy this mix from BPM fest. He runs the gamut between deep house, tech house, and the occasional blessed acid house track, which always gets me giddy. As typical with Sasha’s mixing, keep your eye out for his trademark long, steady builds and his clever use of filters. He is a master at creating tension and releasing it over extended periods; usually across few songs. I think this mix oozes excellence from start to finish and hopefully you’ll agree. Enjoy.
