Hopefully the title of this post brought you to this write up, and I am sure you are either one of two things, for him, or against him. I have been going back and forth today on what to discuss on my post tonight, and when I heard that the LA native, DJ mega star has graced us with a BBC Radio 1 mix, well I had to speak up.
Lets rewind to 2010, I was an innocent new inductee to electronic music, just a novice with an interest in dubstep, wobble and electro. A friend of mine had sent me a Skrillex track, and I got my hands on his first album release, he was still just another producer trying to make his way, fighting for starlight in a blossoming music scene, he certainly was on his way to being a household name but was not quite there yet.
A few months later I found out that Skrillex was going to be playing a show at the infamous Webster Hall, a music hallmark in the Big Apple. Deciding to go and see this former hardcore brat take the reins of Webster Hall me and my good friend jumped into his pic up truck, and with a heavy hangover from my birthday the night before trekked the 350 miles to NYC for one amazing show.
Things for Skrillex have certainly changed, on November 11th of 2010 his openers consisted of Houratron and Felguk just to give you some perspective. Personally I wish things were still like that, Felguk had been one of the few other DJs/producers I knew at the time, and I really really got into Houratron’s set. But lets stay on topic here, my whole underlying point is that when I got to this show, and when I left, I had a smile on my face. It was an absolute blast, I was even there to witness the FIRST skrillbomb (when he jumps on his table and dives into the crowd). This is not done that often anymore only because he may be at risk of being torn to shreds by teenage fanatics. But not only was this a fun show, he played all of his popular songs, new music, other peoples music, everything was just spot on, and it has been like that every single time I have seen him.
Skrillex is one artist that is incredibly versatile that does not find himself stuck in any kind of rut, too stubborn to adjust his music in fear of losing his following, he is constantly morphing and creating, being a true artist. That being said I am obviously a fan of this young man and hearing his BBC Radio 1 Mix only further reinforced my loyalty.
I know he gets a lot of heat being in the spot light; under constant scrutiny the man does very well, and if you speak with anyone who has met him in person, you will know that he is one of the nicest people to come across, which is saying a lot, there are some huge divas out there. This BBC mix is absolutely eye opening to say the least. A cross genre roller coaster, feeding even the most pretentious of EDM snobs audible hunger. Clever transitions and a wonderful cascade of song selection, this is actually going into one of my all time favorite mixes from ANYONE ever. Carry this mix all the way through I am sure you will be very surprised in selections of wobble, garage, deep house, techno, pretty much an all encompassing joyride, cheers everyone.
