24-year-old Mat Zo just doesn’t disappoint – and this unlikely pairing with NYC-based duo The Knocks proves he can take his skills in just about any direction. Mat Zo first gained recognition as a Trance producer, but those who know his history know he used to be a Drum and Bass producer who went by the alias MRSA. As MRSA Mat Zo released songs on Hospital Records which is home to huge names like Netsky, Camo & Krooked, High Contrast, and plenty of others. I personally think Mat Zo began to hit his stride when he began infusing elements of Progressive, Electro, and Funk into his productions and DJ sets, as exemplified by the Bipolar EP. Now the Damage Control album is out, the world knows the song “Easy”, and Mat Zo continues so amaze crowds with his live sets.
We’re pretty big fans of The Knocks here too, so let’s not count them out. Part of the reason this track is so funky is because Ben “DJ B-Roc” Ruttner and James “JPatt” Patterson were clearly part of the writing process. “Get Down 2 Get Up” is a vibin’, feel-good, Disco-infused funk jam that I’m almost a little surprised Mat Zo has his named attached to. And by no means am I complaining, this track is pretty damn impressive, especially with all the junk out there these days in dance music. “Get Down 2 Get Up” has elements of Daft Punk, Chromeo, and, dare I say, Barry White infused throughout. Even more than the jam itself is the vocal hooks layered across, with a man exclaiming you gotta get down to get up.
