Oliver Are Light Years Away

oliver light years away ep

Vaughn Oliver & Oliver Goldstein are the duo that are Oliver (they often go by “WeAreOliver” on their social media), based in the music capital of America: Los Angeles. Their style hangs out in the Indie Dance and Nu Disco realm of Electronic/Dance Music and it should be noted that I’ve yet to hear a song by Oliver that I haven’t liked. Both funky and infectious, Oliver’s songs have seen their songs played across dance floors and festivals. I’m talking about songs like “Move Your Body” (MYB), “LA Funky” (collaboration with Destructo), “Disco Nap” (collaboration with A-Trak), and most recently Oliver’s collaboration with Alex Metric on “Hope”.

But I’m not here to talk about Oliver’s past, I’m here to talk about how they seem to have no signs of slowing down. Today the duo released the Light Years Away EP, a two-song effort out on Fool’s Gold Records. If it wasn’t obvious how much A-Trak enjoys listening to Oliver’s music, playing it live, and working with them in the studio, the fact that this was released on A-Trak and Nick Catchdubs’ label Fool’s Gold should give you good indication how well Oliver are doing by contributing to a thriving label. The title track “Light Years Away” reminds me of a slowed-down version of “MYB” in that it has similar sounds and similar chords. Of course “Light Years Away” doesn’t have the robotic voice and is probably not going to be a club banger, but it’s damn infectious and has some serious head-nodding capabilities. The B-Side “Fast Forward” is perhaps more meant for dance floors, with a higher BPM (around 124 compared to “Light Years Away” which came in just above 100 BPM) and a thumping bass line. You also get that robotic voice you loved so much from “MYB”.

Oliver really are the masters of funk right now and the more people I can get on board to follow them the happier I’ll be. I think the duo are severely underrated and I’m absolutely looking forward to whatever they do next. And if you never listened to their “Generations of Disco” mixtape you can find it below.
