Show Review: Bass Center VIII

bc

Bassnectar took over Madison Square Garden this past weekend, becoming the first bass-music artist to perform at the legendary venue in New York City, as he presented Bass Center VIII. He got by with a little help from his friends, Rusko, Paper Diamond and Big Gigantic, who all threw down tight sets that had the crowd of  over 20,000 raging all through the night. Rusko even graced the crowd with a throwback set, playing tracks dating all the way back to 2009.

Lorin Ashton (Bassnectar) has been moving up the ranks of the electronic music industry for about a decade now. He has cemented himself as one of the “bass gods”, headlining music festivals across the country over the last few years. His talents lie both on and off the turntables, mixing live sets as well as preparing some of the heaviest drops the scene has to offer. That unmistakable ‘Nectar sound rang out loud and true, filling the stadium with as much bass as it could handle.

A highlight of the evening came when W. Darling took the stage with Bassnectar and they performed their hit single “You & Me”, off of his new album Noise vs Beauty. Darling sang live as Ashton gently mixed into the track during a down-tempo portion of his set. The two then serenated the crowd and as the beat began to drop, white confetti poured down from the rafters, creating a moment only a Bassnectar show can provide.

Playing late into the evening, he performed classics like “Underwater” and “Breathless” as well as tracks off his latest works. The set was not the hardest or the deepest we have seen Ahston go, but he provided a unique presentation that stretched across his entire career as a producer and performer. The visuals were on point as usual, with the basis of the stage stemming from a recreation of the spaceship display, which stemmed from the show at the Red Rocks Amphitheater earlier this year. The days of “Basshead” and “Timestretch” may be long behind us, but Bassnectar is going as strong as ever, and his latest edition of Bass Center was everything it needed to be, and so much more.
