On March 4th Anjunabeats will release the tenth installment of its compilation series showcasing the newest Trance and Progressive tracks from artists on its roster. Since 2003 the British label has been releasing a yearly compilation assembled and mixed by its founders Above & Beyond. The album will include four exclusive Above & Beyond productions (including a brand new instrumental club track) as well as unreleased material from artists Arty, Andrew Bayer, Norin & Rad, Super8 & Tab, Boom Jinx, Maor Levi, Kyau & Albert and many more. As we first reported back in December, Above & Beyond would be celebrating this milestone with a release party at New York City’s Roseland Ballroom (one of our favorite venues in the Northeast). The bill included performances by Andrew Bayer, Beckwith, and one of my personal favorites: Norin & Rad. As expected, the show sold out incredibly quickly thanks in part to the promotional efforts by Made Event who are also known for hosting Electric Zoo every year.
Rolling up to Roseland Ballroom I was dumbfounded by how long the line to get inside was. It didn’t help that it was obnoxiously cold out either, but I really couldn’t believe this show was causing a line to stretch around three-fourths of a city block. This line was the reason I was unable to catch Beckwith’s and Andrew Bayer’s sets. The main reason most of the fans were in attendance, however, was to see Above & Beyond and I was excited to finally be inside to see them open up with their new track “Small Moments”, which is also the opening track on Anjunabeats Volume 10. My excitement for this show dated back to Electric Zoo 2012 when the guys stole the weekend with their main stage Day 2 set and things were already off to a frenzied start.
I was a bit disappointed only two of the three members of Above & Beyond were in attendance for the show, with Paavo likely staying behind in the UK to hold down the fort with podcast and label duties. Regardless, the boys threw down with an awesome two and a half hour set (set times). Something I’ve noticed them do is open up shows with a couple bangers and hard-hitting tracks, and then bring it down a bit with some more uplifting tunes, gradually building their set back up as it progresses towards the end. A majority of the tracks played were indeed from the Anjunabeats Volume 10 album, as was to be expected. It was fun hearing a lot of these songs live, as I’d only heard them as part of Trance Around the World/Group Therapy podcasts. A few standout tracks included Audien’s “Wayfarer”, Sunny Lax’s “Isla Margarita”, “The Great Divide”, Norin & Rad’s new track “Aldo”, and of course all of the Above & Beyond songs including the new “Black Room Boy”.
After Above & Beyond finished the place certainly emptied out a bit but that was fine by me as I now had plenty of room to rock out with Norin & Rad’s late-night set. These guys threw the fuck down. Their mix of Trance/Progressive/Electro-House is exactly what the doctor ordered for me to have a great time at a show. Norin & Rad really threw some heavy bangers at us and after hearing a lot of uplifting tunes throughout the night thanks to Above & Beyond; the Electro-House fan in me needed to break out and let loose. Tracks like “Five Finger Death Punch” and their new free song “Snap” were in the rotation as was a heavy Electro-House remix of Icona Pop’s “I Love It”. I wish their set was longer because before I knew it the night had ended and we were once again immersed in NYC’s freezing cold.
Make sure you pick up Anjunabeats Volume 10 when it drops on March 4th and of course to check out any of the artists listed when they come to a city near you!
