Jackin’ Friday Mixes From DJ Sneak and Derrick Carter

To celebrate the launch of our Chicago concerts page, I thought it would be a prime time to showcase the jackin’ Chicago House sounds that still define the much-loved genre and its not-so-distant roots. So today we have two mixes courtesy of some “second wave” Chicago house artists who rose to fame in the mid-1990s, in the second renaissance of dance music in this fair city. Some second wave artists include: Derrick Carter (pictured above), DJ Sneak, Cajmere (Green Velvet), Felix Da Housecat, DJ Funk, Boo Williams, and Mark Farina.  With the re-popularization and modernization of deep house in the last decade, a few of these gents have re-emerged on the global scene namely Sneak and Derrick Carter.  There is no better example of this than their respective recent entries to the venerable Fabric mix series, put out by the world famous London nightclub. If nothing else, this illustrates that the Chicago sound maintains a strong presence in the contemporary scene. Of course with Chicagoans being a fiercely loyal bunch, the sound has always had a home and a huge following here. If you’re in town, it’s definitely something to go out of your way for and as far as today’s mixes go, both are undeniably Chicago. I would point out that Sneak brings a more filter-heavy disco house sound while Derrick has his own unique spin on the Chicago sound; it’s a bouncy and funky flavor that he in the past has appropriately called “boompty boomp”, and you’ll probably see why. Enjoy.
