2013 In Review: Electro House

best-of-2013-electro-house

The term “electro house” certainly took on new meaning over the past year or so, transforming a category that was seemingly well defined into something else entirely. Festivals became saturated with mainstage anthems identified by stomping war-like beats, loud hollow yet booming sounds (think “Incredible” and “LRAD”), quacky synths and funky syncopated melodies, a certain departure from the chainsaw sound that had formerly defined the genre. The new electro house sound invited any and all to participate, as we saw a 17-year old Martin Garrix launch to international fame and artists like Borgore, Major Lazer and Knife Party join in on the trend, departing from the sounds they had become known for. While I have no doubt this sound will look very different one year from now, it certainly was a pleasure to see it ebb and flow and to experience it go further than electro house probably ever has. The following list is what we, the editors, have deemed as the rightful mix of tremendous and/or popular songs that deserve recognition from the past year (in no particular order).
