If you aren’t familiar with Australian DJ/producer Paces now is a perfect time to get caught up. Mikey Perry (AKA Paces) hails from the Gold Coast of Australia, home of Surfer’s Paradise, miles of beaches, and a thriving nightlife scene; it’s a beautiful place that I was fortunate enough to visit a couple times during my semester down under. Paces has already made a name for himself in and around Australia, being named “Top New Producer to Watch” by inthemix; receiving national airplay love on triple j; and having his bootlegs regularly receive over 20,000 plays on SoundCloud. Paces’ first EP The Pact was released last year and his most recent EP Julian shows there is no sign of slowing down; similar to Australians Flume and Wave Racer, it’s time for him to explode all around the world.
The Julian EP dropped last week for free thanks to the folks at Diehigh Records (DOWNLOAD FOR FREE HERE). The sophomore effort contains two original tracks, featuring vocals by Sydney native Erin Marshall, and two remixes by 813 and Melbourne heavy-hitter Chiefs. The EP is filled with kalimbas, steel drums and the subtlety Paces is known for. Julian is a textbook example of Paces’ sound; a little bit Jersey Club, a little bit Future Beat, and a little bit Garage. When I first heard the four tracks below, I was instantly impressed by the absolutely fresh and unique sound Paces was offering up. It’s melodic, ass-shake-inducing, and far and away from anything that’s watering down the Beatport Top 100 these days. I think you’ll be heavily impressed by the songs you hear and if you like it show Paces some love!
