Following up on their acclaimed 2013 debut “Nightfall” – supported by everyone from Diplo to Skream to Claude VonStroke and Groove Armada – House producer extraordinaire Donovans and vocalist Mai Lan Chapiron team up for a second scintillating round of action as the duo Little Freaky Things. What began as a chance MySpace meeting has led to a fruitful collaborative partnership with a very exciting future.
The original mix of “Saturne” is a slice of delicately crafted Electro-Pop that recalls the likes of Au Revoir Simone and Annie on the vocal front, and a chilled-out Hudson Mohawke in its sonic textures. Syrupy, heavily phasered lead lines glide atop booming 808 bass and warm, airy pads in sublime synergy, making for a classy slice of radio-friendly electronica.
Donovans’ own remix takes Deep House minor chord stabs and an old school drum machine broken beat as its textural bed, pitching the vocals down and warping them towards robotic tendencies before a pounding, bass-heavy drop comes into play. The ruggedness increases as the track progresses, creating a markedly darker version for moody club floors. While the original mix is catchy as most Electro-Pop songs tend to be, my recommendation is to not sleep on Donovans’ remix as the French producer created something more danceable and way more up my alley – reminding me of something funky that the likes of Alex Metric, Oliver, Anna Lunoe, and a select few others could replicate.
Other remixes of “Saturne” were produced by Youan, Eero Johannes, and Broke One, each one sharing his own flavor of the track.
