Last month the UK House duo Waze & Odyssey were featured on BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix. As us dance music fans know, it’s an incredible honor to be featured as an essential mixer and it’s usually a testament to production skills, mixing skills, or both. The Essential Mix spots are reserved, typically, for artists who have been crushing it recently, or ones who are veterans in the industry and the world needs a reminder of how good they are. Lead by taste-maker Pete Tong, I constantly look forward to new episodes of the Essential Mix so I can hear the latest and greatest in dance music. Waze & Odyssey’s mix was nothing short of fantastic, and something I found interesting was that Pete Tong continued to refer to them as “the saviors of House music”. Though I don’t necessarily agree with Tong in his categorizing of Waze & Odyssey as saviors of House music (when did House music die? When was it dying?), they are quickly becoming one of my favorite House acts in the world.
I’m here to talk about one of the current tracks I can’t get enough of: Waze & Odyssey’s remix of “Lights Down” by The New Sins. I first heard this one on The Magician’s most-recent Magic Tape (#50) and it immediately stood out. The remix features a typical fat and funky bass line that Waze & Odyssey often treat us to, and keeps intact the chopped up vocals of the original. The groove is so infectious there’s no way any House Head wouldn’t like the track and it will absolutely get the dance floors moving when it drops on March 30th. The EP, including the original version of “Lights Down” will be released on the excellent Defected Records.
Waze & Odyssey are absolutely crushing it right now and I think you’ll agree this track is superb!
