Survival Sunday: RIP DJ Mehdi

Well, this has been quite a week for music and I must say there is a lot to cover today. First and foremost, the biggest piece of music news this week undoubtedly had to be the unexpected death of DJ Mehdi, famed French electro and hip-hip producer and DJ. This guy is a legend and for those of you who have never heard of him, I strongly recommend that you educate yourself on just how influential this cat was to music as we know it today. He will truly be missed by everyone here at MMIBTY and we can only hope he will rest in peace.

Moving on to lighter news, however, this week some huge things came out.  First, Kaskade dropped his BBC Essential Mix (posted below) which I have been listening to on repeat and I can agree with the rest of the blogosphere that it is probably the best House Essential Mix I have ever heard.  He brings in amazing vocals as he typically does over some of this year’s best house tracks to create a seamless two hours of brilliance. Then, Porter Robinson’s Spitfire EP hit the shelves and within minutes Beatport crashed, proving just how massive this cat has gotten thanks to help from homeboy Skrillex (this being the first release under Skrillex’s new label OWSLA) and from, of course, his own insane talent.

Speaking of Skrillex, his newest track came out this week and I must say it’s quite different from what you’re probably used to hearing from this brostep beast.  Officially termed his “Funkt-Out Mix”, Skrillex tries his hand at a different style of production with pleasing results by taking SebastiAn’s track to new heights with elements of moombahton and disco sounds.  Still goes hard though, as you’d expect.

Pretty Lights has been pretty quiet with his production lately but word has it that much more is on the way.  This week he released his track “I Know The Truth”, which was first heard at Bonnaroo earlier this year and has been played throughout his sets as he’s been touring throughout the country. Very HARD Pretty Lights track… Don’t sleep on this one.

Next, our favorite disco house producer at the moment, Viceroy, released his newest track this week entitled “No Ending”.  We did an Artist Spotlight on this San Fran-native a couple weeks back and he continues to impress us with his groovy disco beats. If you’re not on the disco house train yet, why not?

Finally, since Kaskade has just been blowing my mind lately, I had to post his newest track which hit the internet this week. Pure genius… This one’s in his Essential Mix and you probably also heard it at Identity if you went to see Kaskade (remember the lips moving on the screen to the words? I DO!).  Unfortunately the best quality I could find for now but you need to be aware of this track. UPDATE: Found the HQ extended mix, you’re welcome.

And, as promised, Kaskade’s Essential Mix. Please, please, PLEASE LISTEN TO THIS. You will not be disappointed. I don’t care what you think about Kaskade. He is unreal and this mix proves to me that he deserved to win America’s Best DJ this year.
