Well this is kind of awkward. In the past three days, this will be the third project I’ve posted about that involves Diplo. And while I may be a little bit of a Diplo fanboy, I promise you that I did not plan this. Also, as you would expect from Diplo, every post was about as distant musically from each other as they could possibly get. On Monday, I posted about the Dirtybird “takeover” on his BBC radio show, featuring delicious house mixes from Claude Vonstroke and Justin Martin. Yesterday, I posted about Mad Decent’s newest project, hip-hop collaboration Three Loco, featuring an interesting debut verse from Diplo himself. And now I bring you a new dancehall mixtape from Major Lazer. Only Diplo could produce such different things and capture my interest with all of them, in the span of three days no less.
Now, let me drop some knowledge on you. Dancehall music, the high-energy successor to reggae music, is in many ways the precursor to dance music as we know it today. The whole story behind it is too long for this space but look it up. It’s true. So it’s no wonder Diplo sees dancehall music having a place in contemporary dance music in the present and far into the future. It may not be for everyone but anyone who has ever seen what a Major Lazer set can become knows how infectious this music can be. Kick on this mixtape and try something different for size thanks to Diplo. Again.
