Fresh. Among any other word, this is the one I find myself using most often to describe Diplo’s sound and style – both from a production standpoint and from a DJ/live act standpoint. Personally I associate him with the Moombahton movement, and considering all tracks on this EP come in at either 108 or 110 beats per minute (BPM), there’s good reason for me thinking Diplo = Moombahton (BPMs from 108-112 are ones that define Moombahton at the very top-level). But Diplo is more than just a Moombahton guy. If you’ve listened to any of his Blow Your Head radio shows, you’ll see that he throws all different kinds of tracks in his mixes – from House to Dubstep, Hip Hop to Moombahton. But he’s also a producer extraordinaire, claiming one half of Major Lazer and creating tracks for various artists in the music world, such as Usher.
Selecting a few tracks from this EP was insanely difficult. They’re all good in their own way. You can see he’s teamed up with various artists, such as the bigger names of Datsik (Dubstep) and Elephant Man (Dance Hall Reggae), as well as Vermont-based up-and-comers Lazerdisk Party Sex (so stoked for them that they’re getting big and this will only help). Check out a few cuts from Express Yourself and please do all the artists a BIG favor and purchase it if you like what you hear…or if you want to hear more!
